Top 5 Stress Relieving Tips for Office Workers
The past two weeks happened to be quite stressful at the office. Luckily, I am on vacation now for a week. So, looking at different sources, I thought about compiling my top five tips to stay healthy and stress-free at the office.
TIP #1 – Move it! Move it!
It has been said that sitting is the new smoking, and stretching at your desk can relieve stress and benefit your overall health. Whenever possible, move around and be sure to take some breaks whenever you can. Walk around the office, get a drink of water, or meet with a colleague. If all else fails, get up and stand for a few minutes. I find these little breaks can provide a lot of relief and help to clear your mind.
TIP #2 – Eye Spy With My Little Eye
If you’re staring at a computer all day, chances are you have some discomfort or eye strain. An article from the Telegraph.co.uk suggests that using the 20-20-20 rule (look at an object 20 feet away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes) can help you relax as well as provide relief to tired eyes.
TIP #3 – You Are What You Eat
Offices are notorious for celebrations for any reason. One day it’s Bob’s one-year anniversary; the next is Kate’s 24th birthday; after that, it may be Devon’s going away party. Each “celebration” warrants a cake, snacks and maybe some drinks (see this clip from Seinfeld and Elaine’s office troubles). To avoid this, fill your desk with healthy snacks, bring your own lunch and don’t be afraid to say “no thank you.”
TIP #4 – A Clean Place is My Happy Place
I’ve read a disorganized and messy desk fosters creativity, but I don’t buy it. Personally, I find a clean and organized workspace promotes productivity and provides a calming atmosphere to help get your work done.
TIP #5 – Take Your Breaks and Disconnect
Many office workers are guilty of eating at their desks and responding to emails 24/7. I am one of these workers. While it’s sometimes difficult to do, taking breaks and disconnecting from email can help you relieve stress.
